A Good Primer for Pastoral Counseling and Psychoanalysis

I rate this book with three stars because it is slightly dated and officiously written. However, if you have any interest in pastoral counseling and psychoanalysis, this book serves as a good primer as it covers comprehensively many of the standard issues in these disciplines.

As it relates to the book seller, the book arrived soon after my purchase and its condition is commensurate with the seller's claims.

This book is very useful for trainees in psychiatry. It was recommended to me by my long term psychotherapy supervisor. It is a good introductory reading to the world of psychotherapy. The only thing I did not like about the book is the author not using many references when developing his ideas, although at some point he talks about the "obsession" of MDs to have "hard data" and that psychotherapists should feel comfortable dealing with ambiguity and limited scientific evidence given the nature of their practice.

Something Like So Satisfying!

My criterion for a great read is simple. You can't put it down! That's what I experienced when reading, "Something like Summer." I was immediately invested after the first couple of pages, and then it was all about the Benjamin. It surprised me how quickly I was enticed by the main character's candidness, wit and innocence. The author skillfully reminded me all of things that I loved about friendship, crushes, lust and hope. While at the same time dealing with the intrusions of mundane tribulations that always seemed to interfere with the best parts of life. OK, so maybe I identified too closely with Ben's journey, or perhaps the object of his affection felt like a reward for the injustices that he had to endure. You'll just to have to read it to find out. What I will tell you is this...be prepared to alter your life for a short time, cause once you start reading this book, I suspect you'll have a hard time concentrating on your daily grind, until you know how this one ends. It was that way for me, and I hope it will be the same for you as well.

Amazing. Just amazing.

I'm currently halfway through reading this book and had to stop just to take it all in. It's amazing. So much better than any other "gay story" I've ever read. It's inspiring, heartbreaking, and thoughtful. I find myself smiling while reading it and laughing at some witty humor, but I also find myself with watery eyes. The characters are so well thought out, so real, that I can't help but believe that they actually exist somewhere. Like I said, I'm only halfway through and I'm already in love. My only concern now is whether or not Jay Bell is going to seek out the movie deal that is well deserved for a story as heartfelt and daring as this. A story like this needed to be told. Gay teens are out, they are being taunted, but they are also having sex, and for too long we've had to choose between stories of romanticism, sex, and coming-of-age. Thankfully, this book now provides all three in a manner that is real, not merely fantasy. If you don't read this book, you're missing out. But, like I said, I just want it to become popular so a year or two down the road I can watch a few cute actors play out this story!

Something Like Summer by Jay Bell

What could have been a simple and harmless coming of age story in the '90, in the hand of Jay Bell becomes a somewhat surprisingly deep and a little sad quest of a young man towards his future.

Of the many trouble gay kids I have read about, in novels filled with angst and drama, Ben Bentley is probably one of the luckier: he accepted he was gay at a more or less young age, around 14 years old, and after some months spent being the best "secret" friends of his fellow schoolmates, he decided to come out; this event had two consequences, one positive, his family is supportive of him and his mother arrives to give him relationship advices, and one negative, he has no more friends if not Allison, a same age girl who was a former friend of his older sister. But sincerely, being Ben in high school and almost read to face the big brave world, one year or two of abstinence from sex is not a big drama if he is lucky enough to have a welcoming habitat, his home, were he can grow up safe and comfortable.

For this reason, as many other ordinary teenagers in the world, Ben falls in love for a stranger he only crosses on the street while the other is jogging. Same age as Ben, he is probably a new kid at the same high school Ben will attend at the end of the summer; Ben stalks the other teenager until he is able to find out the name is Tim and he is living nearby. And indeed Tim attends the same high school. And the problem is that Ben has came out at school and so everyone, and above all the jocks Tim is friending, call Ben names. It's not easy for a gay kid to come out in high school, teenagers are not always welcoming, and above all they are still unsure of their own, and Ben is an unsettling presence, someone who scares some of them.

For an event and also thanks to Ben's insistence and perseverance, Tim and Ben make friends, but Tim doesn't want to acknowledge their friendship in public: not only Tim is from a very conservative family, he is also claiming (or pretending) that he is bisexual, and he has a poster girlfriend; plus Tim has his own issues at home, and some bad experiences in the past, and more or less he doesn't want to be on center stage, under the scrutiny of public opinion.

From a teenager perspective, and the reader external point of view, the relationship between Tim and Ben when they are in high school is unbalanced: Ben is obviously in love and Tim, as probably any other teenager in the world would do, is taking advantage of that; Tim is not a bad guy, most of the time he grants Ben everything the other kid wants, even when Tim knows it will be trouble for him. Little by little, I started to understand Tim's point of view, how Ben is pushing him at the pace that is probably too fast for him. Ben is not an adult, he is a kid, and like that, he cannot understand that very important things need time.

I will not really go further in describing the story, basically the story follows Ben and Tim from high school to college to their late twenty, sometime together sometime far from each other; Ben will also love someone else, Jace, and while Tim is Ben's first love, powerful and passionate, Jace is Ben's true love, cultivated and strong. It's quite impossible to say who Ben loves more, Tim and Jace are different kind of love, and I think Ben was lucky enough to experiment both of them. The strange thing is that, while Ben and Tim are obviously the "heroes" of this novel, the real good character, the perfect hero in a way, is Jace; I'm true, I think Ben and Tim are cute and nice, but they are also characters that need to grow, while instead Jace is a wonderful man, a light in the life of Ben, and probably the one that allowed Ben to move from kid to man.

I got married in Odessa, to an interpreter, and both she, and my now stepson moved to be with me in Europe. She talks daily to her parents via Skype. We had many Christmases this year, Western & Orthodox, a great time was had by all.

It's true what they say, that most of this is a scam, (in ways you cannot imagine) and that everyone gets paid. But the numbers work like this, 90% of men write but never visit. That is the basic business model right there. Many (working) women rely on their interpreters to be at the beck and call of the men that write. Because they're only interested in the 10% of men that visit, and they may or may not have internet access. If you were poorly paid in a bad economy, and somebody offered you money and gifts you'd take it too, right? You'd be dumb not to. Average salary is $2-300 a month. Food is cheap, clothes and kids stuff are not.

Anastasia are a very serious, (Russian) company, and they actively recruit the women, (ads are all over the city) but the "scams" are perpetrated by the women themselves. Because the fines are so steep for the local agencies that front for Anastasia, especially if they get caught faking chats, ($5k) that they would be stupid to do it. Without Anastasia they have no clients. I used Anastasia. They were nothing but straight with me.

For the 10% that do travel. yes you pay for an interpreter, but would you go to meet a strange foreign man alone? Think of them as chaperones, or employees, there to do your bidding. A lot of that can be avoided if you only look for women who can speak English, and you're not naive or overly gullible. You can just say "No" if the women ask you to go shopping, they'll lose interest soon enough. Similarly, if a woman is unwilling to sit close to you or hold hands, after a few dates, despite being "involved" then she's also not interested. This is a culture where men are still men, and women know the value of a good man. The women are not stupid, they were brought up amongst men, they know one when they see one, and will make their intentions plain enough. As a woman, if you're not married by the time you're 30 in Ukraine/Russia, you're unlikely to get married, and since all the women look good then competition for a decent man, even to be noticed, is fierce. Beauty when commonplace has no value.

Only 10% of men who visit get married, that makes your chances of success 1% overall. This is a high risk endeavour. It is also not cheap. Most of the men who succeed are men who travel alone to visit one woman, (as I did) Otherwise the women know you're "shopping" and they won't take you seriously. The tours are their own thing, a good way to get there if you're scared, a bad way to meet women. The agencies need women to show up, so those you meet are often just interested in the free night out.

The perception is that all Westerners are rich, if you play up to that you'll be taken at your word, (and may be taken for a fool) but a real man wouldn't behave that way in country. If you talk seriously to a woman, she'll talk seriously back, the women are very intelligent and very direct. They know what's in it for them, and a serious man is worth a lot to a serious woman. Ask to meet her friends and parents.

If you do your homework you will find a dissertation by a US student that claims to look at the process with a feminist eye, she looks at both Ukrainian women and Philippina women interviews many, expecting to find something sordid. What she found was that Ukrainian women were not brainwashed, or stupid, but they had no use for modern Western feminism. Not only that, such marriages have a far better success rate than the average America marriage. The Ukrainian women who are serious about this are very serious.

This is a kindle single, advertised as 65 pages long. It's spun out from a shorter article that Moscow correspondent Shaun Walker wrote for the Independent (U.K.) newspaper last year.

It's about what used to be known as the mail order bride business. But things have changed. Now Odessa, in the Ukraine, is a center for plastic surgery and is also the source for many of the spam emails you may get inviting you to chat with Ukrainian ladies. Walker zeroes in on one large and apparently successful company there that hosts such chats and organizes tours for men to meet potential brides. He hops aboard a tour and interviews the men and the ladies (or "girls", but never "women") as well as representatives from the company, Anastasia.

The men are a more varied lot than you would imagine, and some are sympathetic, if pathetically unrealistic. Others are quite unpleasant. The women also fall into different categories. Most are there for the money, but there are a few who also seem to genuinely want to find a good husband and father for their potential children. On the face of it, the whole set up is a monumental scam, in which the men run up bills for chatting online, for talking on the phone, and for meeting the women. They have to pay an hourly fee for translators, even when the women speak English. The women string the men along for as much money as possible before they stop answering their phones or emails.

The men, if they are stupid, are willfully so, since it's painfully obvious what's going on. And yet many of them endorse the service and return for repeat trips. In a way, it's like psychics. Some people believe what the psychics tell them, and don't want to be told that psychics are frauds.

Everyone interested in a "mail order" bride should read this book.

Great work which any man going to Ukraine in search of a wife should read. I did get a girlfriend and I still see her and we enjoy a full relationship, but we decided against marriage, as she did not want children. I think the book is a little bit unfair, because Anastasia, the introductions agency the subject of the book, has a business model that lends itself to fraudsters, albeit, I am sure that the agency does its best to get rid of them. The problem is that it is extremely difficult to get contact information for the women involved, which means that if a women is leading a man on, it is extremely hard to determine that other than by going to the expense of going to Ukraine and then seeing if one is stood up. Other agencies do not have that same business model. But realistically, unless you are rich - say $10 million plus - and look younger than your age, it is a fool's errand to go to Ukraine looking to get a wife who is more than 30 years' younger than you. Moreover, the reason that women go to the sites is economic. That does not mean that a successful marriage is out of the question, but anyone who thinks it is a love match should think again. Arranged marriages often work. These marriages often work, because you need a lot of commitment to pull them off.

Western women fear these women because they are competition. Western men often idealize these women. The reality is that in Ukraine there is almost no social safety net for women who choose badly in the marriage market. Further, there are next to no legal remedies worth having for a woman who chooses badly in the marriage market. The net result is that if you find a woman who wants you and does not want to rip you off, you generally have someone who is careful, dependable and serious, but who is also cautious.

Each of 136 chapters has been prepared according to an appropriate template for technique, anatomy, or pathology; numerous boxed summaries and tables offer quick reference to important topics; and suggested readings and references are included. Wonderful book

As an abdominal radiologist at a cancer center, I find this book to be an excellent reference, an enjoyable read, and an indispensable addition to my library.

The book is organized by organ system, with additional chapters on imaging techniques. There are tons of high quality images (with arrow annotations!) in addition to interspersed color drawings which nicely illustrate concepts.

The organ systems are broken down into logical chapters - for example under Pancreas, there are chapters on "Imaging", "Normal Variants", "Solid Masses", "Cystic Lesions", "Acute" and "Chronic Pancreatitis", and "Diffuse Pancreatic Disease".

Multiple tables, imaging algorithms and "key point" boxes abound. For example, an algorithm on "Practical Approach to Pancreatic Cystic Lesions" makes quick work of the potentially difficult task of deciding when to recommend follow-up versus intervention.

Also, this book comes with online access so you don't have to lug the two volumes with you. (Minor criticism: I would have preferred the images in the online access to automatically be full size instead of having to click on them to enlarge them.)

Overall, I highly recommend this book!

I bought this book couple days ago... truly, I was in doubt at first thinking about buy it or not... But after free preview trial at [...], I decided to get it immediatly!
I'm a general radiologist who face abdominal imaging cases in a daily manner, and my bible for this section was Federle Diagnostic Imaging Abdomen. But this book is much better! The material and topics are organized in impressive pattern, information is not only bare facts and sentences, but greatly written text that contains useable information which is pleasure to read. In addition to many presentable images, you'll find an amazing box titled: What the Referring Physician Needs to Know in addition to Key Facts and Classical Signs boxes at the end of each charpter, with customized summary of the provided information.
I highly recommend this book for all colleagues who deal with abdominal imagimg in daily practice.

A wonderful brief introduction to sleight of hand with cards. First published in the 1940s, it doesn't have up-to-date moves, but it's valuable for what it does have. The book does a good job emphasizing presentation. Perfect for someone who wants to try out card magic but doesn't want to spend much money at first.
