More a scholarly tome than the usual Ansel Adams, like coffee-table fixture, this study sets its dual focus on a new pictorial medium and the new distinctively American region of the 19th century. As the title suggests, it is no more about how the West really was than it is a simple compendium of lovely images. Sandweiss, a professor of history and American Studies at Amherst College, attempts a difficult balance of art and history, where photographs and social studies complement each other rather than compete for intellectual space. Time is on Sandweiss's side: as she shows, America's frontier narrative and the new art form did more or less rise up together. The book stakes its labors on the assumption that, even if the confluence is sheer chance, the influence can't help running both ways: photos helped make the West, and the art form was in turn shaped by the new needs of a newly shaped nation. Sandweiss is richly informative and thoughtful in recounting and reconsidering the times, no surprise for an editor of the excellent Oxford History of the American West. Her account of the cultural impact of the Spanish-American War is probing; the Native American history here is inclusive, surprising and subtle. It would be quite difficult to handle the photography with equal Elan, especially given the author's commitment to the significance of public photographs, in large part, fairly repetitive portraiture and Sandweiss's readings of pictures are rarely insightful, if sometimes usefully direct. As a result, the careful and thoughtful book will appeal less to students of photography than to those interested in the place and time, and how our image of it came together.

Photography and the myths of the American west

"Print the Legend" is an insightful study of the co-development of photography and the image of the American west. Sandweiss begins by discussing the limited uses of daguerrotypes as intermediaries for other forms of visual information in the context of the Mexican-American war and the unfolding western landscape. She goes on to show that as the technology of wet-plate photography developed, so did the direct use of supposedly objective photographs in building the mythology of the western United States. The chapter on photography and representations of American Indians was particularly strong and nuanced.
"Print the Legend" is recommended for anyone with an interest in early photography or western American history. But above all, I found it to be a deep examination of photography and photographic representation.

How the West was Spun

Heroic cowboys and savage Indians. Homes on the cozy range. Gold for the taking in them thar hills. Print the Legend shows how the first photos of the American West were cropped and captioned to embellish the stories and myths that drew the pioneers westward. Few historians write this gracefully, and Sandweiss's prize-winning scholarship is free from pedantic distractions. The engrossing section on photography and the American Indian is worth the price of this handsome. deliciously intelligent book.

WHY

Why was this book written? And more importantly why should you read it?

First what it is NOT.
It is not condescending, hateful or mean spirited in any way.
It does not address any religion by name. It is NOT an attack.
It IS a magnifying glass.
Which leads back to the first question.

Why was this book written?
It was written because Chris grew up in a religious environment. He is not the first obviously, many do.
What he did next though is something all of us should do more. He questioned that which most don't.
And asking questions nobody asks about things too few doubt is not easy. Far from it.
That is the "why" this book was written. Because it is difficult to walk against the tide of conformity.
To seek for yourself the truth of the way the world works.

So it was written to help others who have questions. It is a helping hand down the road of self discovery.
Because until you truly know exactly what YOU believe, you are just a smudged carbon copy of others.
And because it is not easy, and it is emotional; having help along the way is critical.

Now the why "YOU" should read it.
It is a step by step guide on how to find the truth about ANYTHING. Not just religion.
But really, if you think about it. If you can see behind the veil of one of the most powerful institutions in the world,
how can it not help you with other possibly more mundane aspects of life.

"But I'm an atheist. Why should I bother?"
This was me, and I'll tell you why you will benefit.
I was born without a religion, and at 50 have yet to acquire one.
What it did for me was open my eyes to the humanity in us all.
Is it wrong to hate both saints & sinners? Step outside of yourself a moment.
We are all where we are because of the path that led us here.
Typically it was one we never questioned or wandered off of.
Tolerance is needed on both sides of the equation.
Because would you listen to someone who is ridiculing you?
This book is a heart to heart honest discussion of what is.

If metaphors were 2 X 4's you could either knock people upside the head or build bridges.
Chris has built the bridge. The language is precise, articulate and powerful.
Eye opening analogies that make it not only thought provoking, but also enjoyable.

Gods have left the building

This book didn't change my life and I didn't expect it to. I expect it may help instigate change in those who are open to reason and not afraid to challenge their own beliefs and it is the first I have read that lays out the arguments in a clear, concise way. This approach is helpful to those of us who may lack the confidence to challenge religious statements, often voiced as if fact, and lends support to those who wish to join the fray.
I tried to counter the logical arguments as if I were religious and imagined myself as an oppositionist (those who argue for attention)all to no avail.I imagine What are you without Gods? will be a constant reference source in my future discussions both on and off the web.
I would have liked more analogy because where it is used it is effective and this approach helps my aging memory.
Finally I think this book should be re published in a Child friendly format. Children would enjoy and benefit from this discussion in my opinion.
A good read and a book that can stay in the library for reference, after all the debate is likely to last a while yet despite the powerful arguments within.

Chris is a wordsmith. His book deconstructs all religions while it allows readers from all backgrounds the ability to relate from their own experiences in the context of religion.

I've read several books on the subject. This one, I have to say surprised me, as it is one of the most comprehensive. The fact that it is written so eloquently and poetically adds to the readers experience.

A must read for those questioning faith, have walked away from faith, or were never indoctrinated. Highly recommended

In an unusual take on America's leadership crisis, Maccoby calls for a new kind of leader: collaborators rather than stern bureaucrats, who are able to attract a new kind of follower. For workers in the information economy who are skeptical of father figures, psychoanalyst Maccoby (Narcissistic Leaders) advocates relationships to bosses that are less parental and more siblinglike. Exploring why people follow different leaders in different times and circumstances, he rests his analysis on Freud's concept of unconscious transference. Though Maccoby's language is straightforward, skeptics will question the book's emphasis on personality: today's workers seem too detached to see their bosses and CEOs as siblings, much less parental figures. The author moves from theory to practice in calling for exceptional leaders to find new sources of clean energy, quality education and universal health care. In a detailed, hands-on chapter, Maccoby brings together leadership, personality types and organizational design to describe how a premier health-care organization should function. But it's his chapter on the president we need—examining personality types and managing styles—that will draw attention. Maccoby makes no endorsement for 2008, but he lays out the flaws of the current president, who, he writes, has taken big gambles without fully understanding the odds or the consequences of failure. Significant and practical

We need Michael Maccoby's insights about leaders and our world today to follow or become The Leaders We Need. People don't want to be managed by autocratic father figures, though they will follow and better yet, collaborate with, the right kind of leader. This book is trenchant and practical.

Disclaimer: Michael Maccoby and I have worked together for 35 years. For some this might imply a lack of objectivity. For others, this qualifies a reviewer who knows his subject. You are free to make up your own mind.

Dr. Maccoby's insights are based on over 45 years of research (for example, with Erich Fromm in Mexico), teaching (Harvard, Chicago, Oxford, the Brookings Institution), consulting (IBM, AT&T, World Bank, ABB, etc.), and writing. He facilitated a national health care coalition, and directed a foundation-funded research project on exemplary health care systems. He advises diverse leaders and organizations, being trusted by both corporate and union leaders. He is a fellow of the American Psychological and Anthropological Associations, a psychologist, psychoanalyst, and anthropologist.

The Leaders We Need And What Makes Us Follow provides many examples of leaders and their organizations from this rich body of work. It is his most comprehensive book, giving readers the fruits of his productive lifetime in what might be called a grand integrated theory. His wisdom is useful for those who would lead in any way or at any level of an organization, or for understanding leaders we may choose to follow.

He raises the question why none of the existing authors on leadership give a convincing definition of leadership. Many describe leadership traits, others define their ideal leader. Maccoby's definition of a leader is deceptively simple: a leader is a person others follow.

Since both Hitler and Gandhi were people others followed, Maccoby asks: why and how do people follow a leader? Winston Churchill, a great wartime leader, was rejected by voters both before and after the war. Different contexts require different leaders.

Maccoby understands leaders in their historical context, relationship to followers, and results sought. Personality is also important. The most effective leaders will develop their Personality Intelligence, a combination of conceptual and emotional understanding, head and heart.

At the national level, we need leaders who can respond to a world aflame with fundamentalist ideologies, the global ecological crisis, and an increasing percentage of the world facing inadequate food, water, shelter, health. At the organizational level, we need leaders who can organize and inspire knowledge workers in healthcare organizations, schools, and innovative global companies. Traditional bureaucratic managers who built great corporations and government agencies of the industrial era lack the personality and understanding needed to engage a new social character, raised in dual career families rather than the paternalistic families of the past.

The new interactive social character is composed of free agents motivated by continual learning, teamwork, transparency, participation and above all, meaningful purpose. If led as collaborators they are a source of ideas, energy, and solutions. But they are turned off by rules and carrot and stick-based managers. Maccoby describes the changing attitudes of the interactives who don't idealize father figures; and the various kinds of intelligence needed to lead today.

Maccoby writes that leaders need foresight and systems thinking, and he models it. He describes leaders who are resolving today's challenges: transforming health care; creating schools that educate poor minority students who go on to college; an orphanage run on humanitarian principles where graduates lead the organization in eight countries. Maccoby shows that in the most effective knowledge creating organization, different leadership roles-- strategic, operational, and networking-- work together, and that these roles are best filled by different personality types. In "The President We Need" chapter we gain understanding to help us predict how candidates will act once elected. This book is a significant contribution, useful for would-be leaders and followers.

Anthropologist and psychoanalyst Michael Maccoby has been writing about leadership for more than three decades. Here he ventures an argument with an unusual perspective for managerial literature. His fundamental thesis is that changing times demand a leadership model that leaves the industrial, bureaucratic era behind. He explains that new family structures and contemporary ways of working - especially knowledge work - have created a different kind of follower. Maccoby calls these workers "Interactives" and explains their demands in psychological terms. His emphasis on "Personality Intelligence," collaboration and teamwork is not really new, but his explanation of why these factors matter and what impact they have upon public policy is striking. We find his willingness to tackle big leadership challenges - health-care policy, education and even the U.S. presidency - fresh and thought-provoking.

A Contrarian

I have been reading Maccoby's work for years. He is very thoughtful in his approach and willing to call life as he sees it through a trained lense of keen observation. I find the book refreshing because he looks at leadership from a much richer and deeper perspective than most other writers on the subject. For instance, his work on narcissistic leadership challenges many of the cherished notions held by Jim Collins and others. I get tired of those who extol "goodie goodie" leaders as the norm. Maccoby helped me understand the different leadership types who are out there and how I need to think both about those I want to follow and about those I hope will follow yours truly.

If you want a five step approach, then the book is not for you. If you want to be challenged to think and evaluate both yourself and your own organization, then I think you will really enjoy the book.
