Organization Physicals is both enjoyable and inspirational. And unlike most modern business books filled with trendy lessons, this book provides a durable framework that can adapt to all types of situations.

While this book is perfect for CEOs and other high-level execs, you don't need to be part of a fast-scaling organization to learn from this book. You can apply its lessons about the destructive power of entropy to all types of lessons in your daily life, not just your career.

I highly recommend this book.

Important XQuery Book Updated to Include Full XQuery 3.1 Features

This is a wonderful update to the best book on the XQuery language. The first edition published in 2007 had excellent coverage XQuery 1.0. It was around 500 pages. The second edition which covers all the features of XQuery 3.1 comes in over 750 pages! You will find all the details on the new XQuery 3.1 functions like how to format numbers and dates using picture formats. The book has also been restructured a bit to make it more clear. An entire new chapter (13 in the new book) was added for describing Input and Output structures including serialization options. A new Chapter 23 has been added to show how to use higher-order functions. The new Chapter 24 covers the topics of Maps, Arrays and JSON. Anyone building REST web services will also like the section dedicated to RESTXQ. This is a must-have book for anyone transforming XML and JSON.

"Arete" was a word used by ancient Greeks to convey the sense of skill, excellence, and honor in their sports. This collection explores arete in 192 readings drawn from ancient texts translated, edited, and annotated by Miller (classical archaeology, Univ. of California). Thematically arranged, it spans eight centuries, beginning c.750 B.C., and describes athletes, individual sports, equipment, festivals, amateurism, nationalism, and the involvement of politics, society, women, and the arts. This new edition has twice the selections of the first (Univ. of Chicago Pr., 1979), benefiting from recently discovered texts and from Miller's expanded scholarship. However, it does not have the breadth, in text as well as illustrations, of Waldo E. Sweet's Sport and Recreation in Ancient Greece (Oxford Univ. Pr., 1987). An index provides access to subjects, writers, and definitions of words. For large sports collections that do not have Sweet's treatment.

"... beyond the dug-up area..."

This collection of excerpts from ancient sources concerning
athletes, athletic contests, skills, prizes, and the
athletic "mystique" is excellent. For it gives a
generous overview from different sources, from different
ancient venues, and from different time periods. The
reader gains a growing sense of the awe and reverence
in which skilled as well as beautiful athletes were
held, both by spectators at the events as well as
through the fame which they gained that was passed
down in inscriptions, statues, poetry, and the
memories of those who heard of their skills and
victories even in distant places.
The excerpts are not excessively long, but they are
highy interesting and instructive. The topics covered
by chapters are: the Earliest Days of Greek Athletics/
Nudity and Equipment/ The Events at a Competition
(Running, Wrestling, Boxing, Pankration, Pentathlon,
Equestrian, Music, Poetry and Prose Composition, Acting,
Painting)/ Organization of a Panhellenic Festival/ Local
Festivals/ Role of the Games in Society/ Women in
Athletics/ Athletes and Heroes/ Ball Playing/ Gymnasion,
Athletics, and Education/ Spread of Greek Athletics in
the Hellenistic Period/ Greek Athletics in the Roman
Period/ Amateurism and Professionalism/ Nationalism
and Internationalism/ Our Ideal and the Reality.
As the author, Stephen Miller, explains in the
"Introduction": "A definition of -arete- would
include virtue, skill, prowess, pride, excellence,
valor, and nobility, but these words, whether taken
individually or collectively, do not [completely]
fulfill the meaning of -arete-." *** "...the word
-arete- still carries with it a notion of ephemeral
excellence and of transient triumph that make its
translation an exceedingly risky business."
In any particular chapter, the sources cited
may include: Pausanias (author of the famous Guide
Book to Greece), statue inscriptions, Athenaeus
(author of the multi-volume -Deipnosophists-,
Scholars at Dinner), Diodorus Siculus, poetic
excerpts from the -Greek Anthology-, Plutarch,
the ancient poet Pindar, Plato's dialogues, Aristotle's
treatises, as well as many other Greek and Roman
sources.
The title which I chose for this review comes from
the chapter titled "The Events at a Competition"
and shows both the striving for excellence,
and the transience of the accomplishment (if
not the fame). The 3 excerpts concern the
athlete Phayllos of Kroton, who was a pentahlete.
Some of the ancient writers thought the pentathlete
was the physically most perfect and beautiful
of the athletic competitors. The excerpts come
from "The Suda", "a lexicon compiled toward the end
of the 10th century after Christ and based upon a
variety of earlier material" [Miller]. As "The
Suda" says: "Beyond the dug-up area": beyond
measure. A metaphor from the pentathlon [jumping
pit]. It is said to come from the pentathlete Phayllos
of Kroton who, when the skammata used to be 50 feet,
first exceeded them with his jumps, as the epigram
on his statue says: 'Five and fifty feet flew Phayllos'."
The transience and the agony of ancient competitions,
for they were even more brutal in some physical
aspects than any modern events, come in the 3rd
excerpt: "'To jump beyond the dug-up area': with
reference to doing something hyperbolically, because
Phayllos jumped more than 50 feet and tore up his
leg."

Wrong Edition

The kindle version is of the 2nd edition. The 3rd edition is much expanded and the one regularly used in courses on ancient sports or Greek civilization. The ad for the kindle is somewhat deceptive. It shows the cover of the 2nd edition but when you look inside, it shows the 3rd print edition (with a small warning note). According to my students, when you order it, you do get the 2nd edition. Some of my students have not been very happy when they have been forced to buy the paper version after having already paid for the kindle version.

Against the backdrop of British and Russian―and increasingly American―maneuverings for dominance in the region, Roger Howard explores the history of oil exploration in anecdotal style and with a lively pace. He brings to life forgotten figures such as Frank Holmes, revered by the Arabs as Abu Naft (the "Father of Oil") and Harry St. John Philby, father of the famous British double agent Kim Philby, as well as figures from the world stage such as Julius de Reuter, founder of Reuters News Agency, the Armenian oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian and Chicago-born entrepreneur Charles R. Throughout the twentieth century, the demand for petroleum increased and it eventually became one of the most valuable commodities traded in the world market. Very informative, but frustrating read

I basically agree with the first review. But so many of the geographical areas, including towns and cities, were not shown on the 2 maps. Very relevant to current world events. Being from an area that is very active in O&G I can relate historically. Would reread if had better maps and references to them.

Interesting Though Flawed

This book provides an interesting narrative of the European/Western people involved in the search for Middle Eastern Oil. The author is at his best when describing individuals - bringing them vividly to life. Anyone interested in any of the particular, often very colorful and eccentric, Western individuals involved will find it worth reading. He is particularly good at depicting Major Frank Holmes. However, his focus on each individual is so exclusive that whatever historical and geographical context he provides for them is sloppy ranging from confusing to erroneous with an odd whiff of British Orientalist bias. For instance he insists on referring to "Constantinople" noting airly in a footnote without documentation that the name was not officially changed to Istanbul until 1930. Oh? In another footnote he explains that Alexandretta is now called Iskinderun (correct) and is in north west Syria. Wrong. It is in Turkey. Only two maps are included and both are inadequate. He is even more confusing when he is talking about events in the Persian Gulf referring to both Kuwait and Bahrain as "the kingdom" and referring once to Kuwait as "the island." Many of his references are interesting and useful but a bibliography of all of them would have been a simple and useful addition. The book needed a knowledgeable editor and fact checker.
