G. Randy Slone is an electrical engineer with nearly two decades of experience in data processing and industrial electronics. A private engineering consultant, his clients have included DuPont, Champion International, and Ralston Purina. Also a former college instructor, Slone spends much of his time working in his state-of-the-art home electronics laboratory.

Nice addition to my library

This book was a nice purchase, I thought it would only cover construction of high power amplifiers, I was surprised to find out theres quite a bit of theory in there aswell. It is evident that the author uses as foundation the books and articles by Self and Cordell since many of the designs are based on those by the before mentioned authors. The book features several circuits and PCBs so the reader can build his own power amplifiers, however the big disadvantage with Mr. Slone's books is that the PCB masks are printed in the book rather than offered in a CD or similar media, so in order for you to properly use the PCB masks, you have to either torn the page apart from the book or you have to force open the book to the point in which you break or damage the spine in order to take a proper scan or photocopy.

Randy Slone regurgitates no one; he states in his own words, clearly and in accessible language for the non-specialist, established principles of solid state amplifier design, and places these in the context of his suggested projects. One chapter is devoted to twelve "ready-to-construct" cookbook designs, and full-size PC board artwork for several of these are provided in an appendix. In short, if you want to build and/or design your own audio power amplifiers, this is an excellent resource.
Randy Slone begins with the basics of acoustics relating to audio power amplifiers and methodically walks the reader through a variety of designs, ranging from old to new, and simple to complex. As one would expect, much of this information is founded upon well established research. There is also a significant portion devoted to new techniques and principles of amplifier physics which help to de-mystify amplifier operation and provide pathways to improved performance. Unlike many similar textbooks that focus on only one topology or design philosophy, Randy Slone examines the broad range of amplifier configurations and power capabilities, including mirror-image input stages, fully-complementary VA stages, paralleled output stages, and lateral MOSFET designs.
Randy Slone may be somewhat opinionated, but his opinions appear to be logical reflections of measurable facts; and as any good scientist knows, that what cannot be measured does not exist for the world of science and engineering. He makes short shrift of tube cult; these are devices that produce measurable distortion and can never compete with the power capacity of modern solid state systems. The writing style and technical descriptions are easy to follow although a background in electronic fundamentals is helpful. No more than high school algebra is needed. Occasional humor increases the reading pleasure. Randy Slone has the somewhat eccentric habit of discussing current flow as if it traveled from negative to positive pole, while the convention is to describe it moving the other way. Once the reader becomes accustomed to this way of thinking - not too silly for electrons do indeed travel from negative to positive - it becomes easier to read. It is a complete resource for designing and constructing your own high-quality audio power amplifier systems.
I am currently building myself six of Randy Slone's OPTIMOS kits after reading the book. The fact that Randy Slone also sells the kits from his web site is a highly positive feature. Imagine trying to source all those components and make the PCBs yourself. Furthermore, Randy Slone is always available to help with specific questions and suggestion on a one to one basis. He really does answer his e-mail.

I've been thinking about putting my 30+ years in electronics to use and build something worthwile. In the late '80s I bought a Nakamichi PA300 for my car and nothing has come close to it. I've since recapped it and it still jams. In an effort to complement it I started looking through what today's tech has to offer. A class D with literally 100 times more distortion is about all that you can find nowadays unless you spend about 100 times more money than I did back in the '80s.
Anyway I got this book (and several others) to explore the possibility of building something comparable to my Nakamichi. This book uses the writings of Self and others to come up with several feasible designs of varying power and quality. He puts it in perspective for you and points out what decisions you'll need to make first (power source and output, topology, BJT or FET, etc.). But first you need 3 things that will dictate what you do more than anything, the right power supply, the right heatsink, and this book.

Good information for experimenters

On the verge of suicide, illumination came, ironically, from the sport I had a love/hate relationship with since high school, and the Native American Indians whom I encountered during this difficult year who showed me the path without ever speaking a single word. One of those beautifully written, true to life books that make you think about your own struggles, and the hidden struggles of others. We all go through them and this book reinforces the strength of one of my favorite quotes, "Be kinder the necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle". Courageous, passionate and beautiful

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting because I was so lost in her world. Her diary entries flip between the dark soul searching exploration that so many young people experience and the brilliantly bright soul-appeasing feelings of yoga and enlightenment. The transitions are stark and you feel connected to the author and her inner torment. Beautifully written with courage, passion and intelligence.

About the Author
Philip Dutre is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). His research areas of interest include photorealistic graphics, real-time global illumination, texture synthesis and perceptual-based rendering algorithms. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Leuven and spent several years at the Program of Computer Graphics at Cornell University. Philippe Bekaert is associate professor in computer graphics at the Expertise Center for Digital Media of Hasselt University, Belgium. He obtained a Masters degree in physics (1991) and computer science (1993), as well as a Ph.D. in computer science (1999) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Kavita Bala is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department and Program of Computer Graphics at Cornell University. She specializes in scalable computer graphics leading research projects in interactive rendering, scalable illumination, perceptually-based rendering, feature-based graphics, perceptually-based rendering, and image-based texturing. Bala received her B. Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT, Bombay), and her S.M. and Ph.D. from MIT.

Best Global Illumination Theory Book

This is, by far, the best global illumination theory/algorithms book available. The book covers techniques and theories that are at the foundation of all modern renderers. It also provides some nice psuedo-code that demonstrates how to translate theory into code.

The book does have some math, but it is VERY well explained(I'm not a math god by any means, yet I found the equations easy to follow because the authors build an intuitive understanding before hitting you with the equations). A basic calculus course is all you need to get through this book.

This book is NOT an Open GL, DirectX API book. It's a book that focuses on rendering techniques and theory, and it does a great job.

A valuable book for a computer graphics PhD student or researcher

With this book you are not going to learn how to write a ray tracer. In general the book does not explain how to program things, it explains the theory behind different rendering techniques. The book puts together many things that have previously been published only in research publications. For a PhD student or researcher this kind of a book is really a relief as it makes it easier to gain overall knowledge of the science of global illumination.

Distinct Book on Spirit Helpers

The Occult Book of Doorway Entities by S Rob covers information such as some of the names of the spirits attributed to being the conduits of travel between various spirit realms. S Rob also explains why there is a difference between calling on spirits of different realms even though both may be attributed to being doorway spirits, even when some people may have benevolent/good intentions for lumping them together (he mentions an example using 2 spirits from different religions). He also goes into the names of various angels and archangels attributed with gaining easier access to travel to heaven (I’m taking this to mean doing so in one’s sleep but I understand that there are people that can easily do so via meditation and/or their psychic sight). I admit that I’m also using the Occult Book of Doorway Entities by S Rob as a muse to one of my stories and connecting the book with how it works in conjunction with contact with my own soul/spirit/higher self.

Open The Doors

An excellent book on opening gateways,giving loads of great information.I especially liked working with S.Rob Invictus and have been using this Magikal servitor for other purposes than gateway opening I think this will be a very useful servitor to work with as I got a VERY strong sense of it's prescence.Not surprisingly another great book from S-Rob.

Great Starting Point

Probably the best, most commonly used technique book in the string world today. Everything has very clear directions, and it introduces concepts slowly, one at a time. It leaves a lot of things up to the teacher's discretion. I love the use of duets later in the book. I wish the CD accompaniment went farther into the later pieces, and I also wish they discussed bowing techniques a little earlier than they do.

Easy to Navigate but poor Binding for Book.

The Book itself is excellent as it comes with ideas for grading evaluations for the teacher to use on the student. I personally find these forms very helpful as I come from a Woodwinds background. This is definitely a teacher's manual that helps the teacher teach the student and gives clear expectations. The teacher's manual also matches up with the student's books very well. My only negative comment about this item is that the binding of the book is a plastic and spiral bound. Binding like this, if not taken care of well, will eventually break and deform.

I ordered essential elements for strings and got essential elements for strings 2000. It will still work because it is almost identical but I was seriously disappointed because of the almost in that sentence. The student elements are the same in both books so I can still teach my class, but the teachers section has a couple of differences I wanted.
