Thorough workbook that addresses issues critical to healing from sexual abuse

As I Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist I ordered this workbook for use with adolescent and young adult clients who have experienced or are experiencing some form of sexual abuse. Many people who read books about abuse (or who even begin therapy to deal with abuse-related issues) often voice the common complaint that they don't find enough in the way of strategies that address the multi-faceted, roller-coaster-like feelings experienced during this critical time of healing. I have been quite pleased with this workbook, as it normalizes symptoms of hurt, fear, frustration, anger, etc. -- rather than making someone feel like an outcast as they deal with their state of "brokenness". In Their Own Words is a positive, solution-focused workbook that addresses every area one could imagine regarding sexual abuse -- highly recommended!

I am now purchasing several workbooks to keep in my office, just to have them on hand. While this workbook is designed to be used in conjunction with therapy, it may also be beneficial with good, qualified mentoring or in group settings that are therapeutic in nature. It is possible to use this workbook without being in therapy (although there are several exercises related to working through the abuse with a therapist); however, I would recommend additional guidance in the case of younger adolescents.

I have used this book numerous time with girls who have been sexually abused but do not have posttraumatic stress disorder. It has been quite helpful and structures the sessions well.

an excellent therapy tool

I'm a therapist and have used this book as adjunct tool with clients. It has psychoeducational information written in an accessible way, exercises, journaling sections, questions one can use for discussion, and pieces written by other children. I have found it very helpful, particularly with adolescents. It was recommended by the team who teach Trauma-focused CBT for children. A truly useful book for one's professional library.

Go with O'Sullivan instead

I bought this book because the price was right and because the Kaplan brand is almost always worth checking out. Unfortunately, the material is not very good.

As a review text, it is inadequate. It has a few tables and it discusses a few bullet points about relevant NPTE concepts, but the information provided is not complete enough as a standalone text. (As an example of this.. when you review "correct" answers in their answer key, explanations of correct answers are justified by references to other PT texts).

As a text for test questions, it is also inadequate. There aren't enough questions and the questions they do have are generally straightforward. This text has 500 pages, but 200 of the pages are alloted to the TWO practice tests. That's an example of how little content is provided in this text.

My recommendations?

Skip this one. There are far more useful alternatives. If you need a good review text, O'Sullivan's NPTE review and study guide (available on [...]) is far more comprehensive, but it is a dry read. I hear that Giles' "PT Exam" text is an easier read, but that its test questions are easier.

Very concise book, best used in conjunction with a more descriptive book e.g. O'Sullivan.
Helpful mini tests with each chapter to highlight areas to concentrate study; although be aware that the letter given for the correct answer isn't always the correct answer (the descriptions of which answers are correct are right,just not always the corresponding letter).
The full length practice tests were helpful although I would have preferred them to be computer based to more simulate the real exam.
Overall a handy book that is recommended if you are looking for a book that doesn't go into too much detail as good for key point learning.

Fun Stuff

If you are just getting started in your readings with Henri Nouwent this is a good place to start. This is a great books because it is like a greatest hits album. Just sample some of Nouwen's writings in this book and from there you can choose what you want to read next. I have been reading Nouwen's books for the past three years and I really enjoy his writings.

The Best of Henri Nouwen

Editor Robert Durback has gleaned the best of Nouwen's writings and successfully linked them together in a meaningful sequence creating a chain of inspirational thought. Seldom has the work of an editor paralleled that of the writer, but when it happens the end product is better than the sum of its parts.
Durback has harvested every resource of Nouwen's spiritual essays, taking excerpts from books, magazine articles, and unpublished journals. They touch upon the human journey in a personal, intimate style; a style that has made Nouwen one of the most widely read spiritual writers of the past century. In this anthology his essays define hope and they definately communicate hope in an inspiring manner. I don't feel that Nouwen ever acquired the hope he was seeking, but his desire to capture it for himself, as well as for others, was a lifelong pilgrimage of his. In his search, he shared with his readers the struggle and the ideal of nearing perfection.
Compassion was one grace Nouwen was not lacking and could be found in every topic he wrote about, whether expressed implicitly or explicitly. Here's a sample:
"Compassion lies at the heart of our prayer for our fellow human beings. When I pray for the world, I become the world; when I pray for the endless needs of the millions, my soul expands and wants to embrace them all and bring them into the presence of God....In praying for others, I lose myself and become the other, only to be found by the divine love which holds the whole of humanity in a compassionate embrace."
The second edition includes a 50 page Memorial Tribute that tells of Nouwen's life as a person and as a writer. There's also a great 18 page bibliography.

"Seeds of Hope" is an excellent introduction to the writings of this gifted man of God. The selections contained herein cover a range of related topics and each section is short enough to read in one brief sitting, yet substantive enough to provoke thought and discussion.
Nouwen was a man blessed with many talents: author, lecturer, intellectual. Yet, the gift that shines most clearly throughout his works is pastoral humility. He reminds the reader that thoughtful insight is valuable only if shared with graciousness and humor. Fortunately, most, if not all of his works remain in print. Excellent text on teaching; arrived in great condition

This is a very helpful and well written text on teaching. The authors' progressive and enlightened approach (it's all about the student taking charge of his/her own learning, especially in group work) is provocative and layed out in detail.
I was quite pleased with Amazon and the whole buying process.

Still a Must-Read, Even After a Century and a Half.

Dozy's four volume masterpiece remains even today, after a century and a half, one of the most important histories ever written about Islamic Spain, and perhaps, the best ever. Dozy was a linguistic genius and even native Arabic writers usually agree that his knowledge of Arabic was flawless, so much so, that he was able to expose Conde's many errors.

The work takes us up to about the year eleven hundred, so it covers the history through the most important period. It unfortunately leaves out the last few centuries, but they are mostly important in regards to the Almohads, which were just another austere Berber tribe among many, and the later stages of the Reconquista. In the book, Dozy focuses heavily on two of history's greatest figures, Abd-er-Rahman III, and Almanzor, the latter of whom was a cross between Metternich, Bismarck, and Machiavelli. (This work was written in an era when historians were not under the restrictions of political correctness, which make some newer works published today practically worthless.)

There are three things to be aware of. The author has a very strong bias against Catholicism, which at times skews his presentation, but this is to be expected, as Dozy is descended from Protestant French Huguenots. Second, the translation from the original French seems to be from the same era as the original. The book is chock full of English words you have never seen, and won't ever again see. Third, the scanning was sloppily done, so patience is an absolute prerequisite. (And at only $0.99 hardly worth complaining about.)

Still, even with the above mentioned flaws, I still give it five stars for its importance to this subject cannot be overestimated. It is a must-read for anyone interested in delving deeply into Islamic Spain.

WARNING: This book is definitely not for neophytes, those with only a passing interest, or those with a short attention span.

A Fascinating History

Reinart Dozy was a brilliant scholar focusing on the Middle East, Islam and terms in those days an "orientalist" of the first order.
This excellent work in the history of Islam in Spain is the most thoroughly researched and insightful book you will read in the topic. It's insights will shatter some long held assumptions and bring to life the culture and history of Iberia. Read this book.

Very useful. Most important I suddenly understood the difference between the Shiites and the Sunnis, because something like the same rift happened in Spain.
I give it only 3 stars because the typos are very many and very serious.
