At 55 and an avid reader, one of the best and most fun books I have read in the last year.

Adults don't be put off by the fact that the heros in this book are children... Or are they? I read some of Harry Potter books, which is definitely directed more to the young (found it to young for me ) this book, with its college-level vocabulary , its characters and its settings in various points in history speaks to the adult reader, although can be enjoyed by the young. Wonderfully written and excellent character development. Adults can easily identify and see the personalities of adult friends in Rigg's young heros and yet something would have been lost had these characters been portrayed as adults and not children (David vs Goliath ). It moves quickly along and extremely difficult to put down. Although can be read without reading the first book, strongly suggest you do read the first; although I liked this book a bit better than the first.

Definitely worth the wait!

After a long wait, it’s finally here. Hollow City, the second book in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series. And it is so worth it and then some.

I received my copy on the afternoon of the 11th and finished the whole thing by midnight of the 13th. There never was a dull moment from the first page to the cliffhanger in the end. Yes, like with a LOT of book nowadays, this is a part of a trilogy or series. It kept me on the edge of my seat and never let go.

We pick up where the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children left off. The peculiar kids and Jacob (who was revealed to be also peculiar) were left to their own devices after their home was destroyed. They did manage to save Miss Peregine, in bird form, from the wights but she could not turn back into a human. They make their way to London, the peculiar capital of the world, to seek help for their injured mistress.

The author definitely improved the children’s voices in this new book. I enjoyed Olive, Millard, and Bronwyn. Jacob also changed. No longer was he the jaded rich kid from book one. He grew up; he took on new responsibilities as well as an understanding about his peculiarity. I like this new Jacob. It reminds me of how Harry Potter evolved from a clueless Muggle-raised boy to a very capable wizard. His relationship with Emma didn’t irk me as much as it did before; I actually thought it was cute and it gave the story the push forward that it needed in the end.

The main characters are children but this is definitely not a story for children. It’s dark and scary at times. There are parallels to the horrors of World War II. And just like with The Hunger Games, children are at the center of the tragedy. There were happy moments but they are few and far between. They are just… moments. The feeling of danger and fear and uncertainty rule throughout the book and that made it so very engaging. “What happens to them next? What’s around the corner? How will they go on?” The final chapters completely blindsided me. Imagine me fighting to keep my eyes open at 12mn and then suddenly shooting straight up as I turned to the last pages. Like I said my review of the first book, “The author CANNOT leave it at that!”

As usual, the photographs are stunning. The story was perfectly crafted around them and each photo fit a character and/or a scenario perfectly. Hats off to Mr. Riggs for doing such a great job of building a whole world for us based on found pictures. I can see how one can be inspired by such beautiful pieces.

Do yourself a favor and please buy a physical copy of this book (and of the first one). Even if you are an ebooker, it is so worth it to add these bound pieces of art to your shelf. I read the first one on my B&N nook but I eventually managed to get hard copies. And I got so excited when they came in the mail and even though I already read it, I still browse the pages, admiring the stunning photographs.

An ok but disappointing sequel

Wasn't blown away... thought it was a disappointing sequel, but still good.

What I didn't like:
I was disappointed in the pace and the plot.. it felt artificially manufactured to create tension, as opposed to those stories where the tension feels real... And I think that might have been in part because of how I felt about the pictures this round... it felt that at many points, the author was creating words to fit a picture he wanted to add--when it didn't really add to the plot or the characters or the pacing or really anything.

I was also annoyed by the romantic aspect, but disregard that if you like that kind of thing ;) To me, it's always annoying when it's over-the-top cheesy, and I had a hard time finding it realistic in the atmosphere -- ya know, life or death.

I thought that the characters spent WAY too much time NOT using the peculiarities they've spent a LONG time having when they were confronted with danger... I know, in some cases it made sense, but in others it was like this weird inexplicable delay. And I felt that the development of Jacob's peculiarity, while the rest of us could see it coming 100 miles away, took WAY too long to FINALLY show its face.

And I'll say, I just did not like the near-ending. But what and why are spoilers :)

What I did like:
It's still just an interesting concept and I like the idea of having a story with realistic (ish) pictures accompanying it. I really liked some of the development of characters (Bronwyn and Olive in particular), and I liked the addition of some of the new characters (Peter-and-Joel and Joel-and-Peter). I also thought that Riggs had good ideas and some of his plot development was really interesting. Although I felt the pace was off and forced at times, there were other times when it flowed quite nicely -- particularly when they meet.... Althea (I'll say no more).

If you just loved the first, it's likely worth it to read the 2nd. If you can ignore some of the deficiencies, my guess is you'll probably even really enjoy the second! (a lot of people sure have :)) Otherwise, the above notes may give you just the amount of "managed expectations" needed to enjoy the book anyway :)

About the Author

Dr. Wolfgang Marty is vice president at Credit Suisse. He joined Credit Suisse Asset Management in 1998 as Head Product Engineering. He specializes in Performance Attribution, Portfolio Optimization and Fixed Income in general.�Prior to joining Credit Suisse Asset Management, Marty worked for UBS AG in London, Chicago and Zurich. He started his career as an assistant for applied mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.�Marty holds a university degree in Mathematics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and a doctorate from the University of Zurich. He chairs the method and measure subcommittee of the European Bond Commission (EBC) and is president of the Swiss Bond Commission (OKS). Furthermore he is a member of the Fixed Income Index Commission at the Swiss Stock Exchange and a member of the Index team that monitors the Liquid Swiss Index (LSI).�

Tu Na Si Ba was traditionally only taught to senior disciples, and has never before been written about in English or Chinese. Tu Na literally means "spit out" (Tu) and "receive" or "accept" (Na). In both martial and Daoist practices, Tu Na refers to breathing exercises associated with self-cultivation.

When practicing the gentle, slow movements of Tu Na Si Ba, one effectively "breathes out the old and takes in the new" (Tu Gu Na Xing). This combination of inner-directed movement and breathing builds up Qi in the body, while simultaneously strengthening the tendons and bones. Every aspect of Tu Na Si Ba directly connects to the spirit, internal mechanics and martial techniques of Xing Yi Quan. The practice of Tu Na Si Ba is particularly critical to understanding and developing skill in San Ti Shi and Pi Quan (Splitting Fist), the core practices of Xing Yi Quan.

The final section of this book presents San Ti Shi, the fixed standing (Zhan Zhuang) practice unique to Xing Yi Quan. One of the key training methods, but perhaps the least understood, the practice of San Ti Shi allows one to actualize the body's intrinsic, instinctual energy and to connect with the Original Spirit (Yuan Shen).

In the text, verbal instructions are deliberately minimal. In this way, the text adheres to the true teaching. When Song Zhi Yong teaches, he does not tell the student what he feels, but instead asks each individual student what they feel and then makes corrections accordingly. Therefore, we have only included the verbal instructions that Song Zhi Yong actually gives to his students when teaching them San Ti Shi and Tu Na Si Ba. The more than 450 photos by Master Song's disciple, Valerie Ghent, clearly illustrate details of the exercises.

This book covers only the key internal development exercises of Li Gui Chang's Xing Yi Quan: Tu Na Si Ba and San Ti Shi. It is not intended to be a complete manual on the art of Xing Yi Quan. Video footage of Song Zhi Yong performing Tu Na Si Ba is posted online. The link to the video is accessible from within the book. About the Author
Master Song Zhi Yong is a senior disciple of Master Li Gui Chang. Song Zhi Yong teaches Xing Yi Quan and Tai Ji Quan in Taiyuan, China and is a senior advisor with Internal Arts International. This book is the product of a collaboration with Tom Bisio, Valerie Ghent, Huang Guo Qi, and Internal Arts International.

Little Treasure

Excellent book with clear photos, insight and guidelines for teachers and students of Li Guichang's very refined and deep Neigong set. Very grateful to Song Zhi Yong and Tom Bisio for making this 'indoor' set available to the general public.

Tu Na Si Ba is a very neat and compact set, useful to any martial practitioner, and key to developing the Shen Fa (body method), along with San Ti Shi, in this style of Xing Yi Quan. The set is deceptively simple, but there is much to unpack, so I recommend this as supplement and aid to instruction from a qualified teacher, regardless of level of experience in internal arts, yoga and/or other types of mind/body movement.

I have been practicing this set for several years now with my teacher, Martin LaPlatney, and, over time, it has made many changes to my body and helped improve the quality of my Taiji and Xing Yi practice. While this set is a great aid for developing internal qualities, it's also a health maintenance set--very useful to those rehabbing from injuries. As a Xing Yi and Taiji instructor, I am very happy to have this manual to share with my students.

An Important Work that Gives an Important View of the Inner Workings of the Internal Arts

This book details information on a central neigong method employed in the style of Xing Yi taught by the late Li Gui Chang and Song Zhi Yong, as taught to Tom Bisio. This method is considered very important to developing the internal aspect of this style, and combines with the San Ti Shi to create the root for high ability in this art. Such information used to be the type of thing you would expect to be only available to disciple level students of the art. While I would say that personal instruction would still be important so that corrections could be made, still the book has great value just describing the practice and explaining where the exercise fits in this style of Xing Yi Quan. I have practiced this, but I have not developed it enough to get many of the benefits available. The book encourages me to go further with this practice. I noticed since trying again, that my qigong had improved in the interim since practicing it before and makes me wonder if I can get over the hump this time...

I love this coloring book!

I love this coloring book, both as a counselor and as a mother. As a counselor I find it to be a wonderful resource to have on hand for young clients who are exploring their gender identity, or challenging gender roles and norms. It has been well received among clients. As a mother I enjoy the non-threatening format of a coloring book to open the lines of communication with a child about what gender is/issues around gender in general. I have shared this coloring book with friends who have tomboy daughters or sons who love to dress up in princess dresses--again, so very well received among children.

Want to let your child know you accept gender diversity? This coloring book can help.
Sometimes the Spoon is an 8 � x 11 inch coloring book with 24 panels (12 double-sided pages) showing gender variance in many forms - boys liking dolls, girls liking trucks and tools, boys cross-dressing, both genders with same-sex attraction, monsters that like pretty things, etc. Short sayings in large type accompany each panel, emphasizing what the pictures are intended to say.
Suitable for all children who like to color, it can also be an introduction to books where parents want to encourage their child to accept gender diversity. Children learn at an early age what is socially acceptable, in toys, clothes, and play. This small coloring book can help them understand that liking something different is OK.

Sweet, creative and fun

Ms. Bunnell has created several books which give an alternate vision of ways people can live their lives. I think it's great that children and adults as well can have a cute, fun coloring book to read and talk about. Maybe books like these can help stop bullying of children who don't fit the media mold. We need a lot more love and acceptance in our world. Kudos to Ms. Bunnell.

A breakthrough way to use Reiki to change your life...

This book is excellent. It is very specific: a book to teach you how to use Reiki to change your core beliefs about abundance and lack. It is NOT a book designed to teach you about Reiki itself. Reiki cannot be learned from a book (Diane Stein's teachings notwithstanding, see my Amazon.com review of her book.) It IS a book to teach those who are already Reiki practitioners to use Reiki to change their lives.
All too many of us carry negative beliefs about money and our right to abundance. Many of us were taught that money is "bad", that only those who are not spiritual will have abundance. What nonsense! Spirit wishes us to live life with abundance, it is our birthright (see Lee Carroll's Kryon books for more info on this topic.) Horan's book provides a step-by-step program which, if followed, will disolve blockages in your life and allow the natural abundance of the universe to flow through it.
I followed the program, and the changes in my life were amazing. Not overnight, but substantial nonetheless. The most important part was the change in my mental attitude, and how my life flowed from that. If you are already a Reiki practitioner who wants to change their life, buy this book! If you're interested in learning more about Reiki, find a good Master/Teacher in your area and seek training from them. A teacher is vital, you cannot learn it alone. But once learned, the changes in your life will astound you! I have been praticing Reiki since 1994, and have been a traditionally trained Master/Teacher since 1998. Good book about ABUNDANCE through clearing limiting beliefs

Yes, this book has been written by a Reiki Master, but the focus is more on clearing the subconscious of your limiting beliefs about abundance and energy... There is not a lot of information specifically on Reiki, but instead it uses Reiki as an additional method to help the process of clearing. If you are looking for good information about how to experience a more fulfilling life, then this book is very good. If you are looking mostly for Reiki information, then try 'Essential Reiki' by Diane Stein. Another reviewer here has pointed out what they believe to be 'faults' of this book, but these only make up a tiny portion of the book and are merely a viewpoint - can you really expect every sentence in an entire book to agree with your own thoughts? The author also makes it immediately obvious that this is her second book and is NOT specifically about learning Reiki. Having myself taught Reiki to students in over 20 countries and so therefore having an idea of what is actually useful on the Path, I can honestly say that this is a worthwhile addition to any collection.

This book is great

This book is really not about Reiki specifically. It's more like John Randolph Price's book (The Abundance Book). Daily exercises are given which relate to each chakra of the body. These are repeated for 21 days and then you switch to affirmations for 21 days. While I don't do as well with affirmations, I found the first half of the book to be fabulous. The sections where you talk about or write about your feelings in areas corresponding to the 7 chakras was powerful for me. You begin to understand yourself and envision yourself transcending your old limitations.

Essentially what happens is that you are asked to meditate on a theme and talk it out (preferably out loud though I did occassionally write it out when I was not in a position to do the exercises aloud). So you'll talk about wisdom or money and tell yourself all the reasons why you don't or can't have it. Then you shift your energy by talking about why you want it and how you want it. When you get out all of your negative thoughts in this way, it makes it easier for your mind to relax when you are going into the positive things. You can actually allow yourself to visualize or declare what you want without some inner voice issuing a challenge because all of your doubts and fears have already been aired out.

You can combine this with Reiki if you are a practitioner, but you don't have to be a Reiki practitioner to use the book. Though it is called Abundance through Reiki, it does not focus on the symbols or hand positions but focuses on the idea of Reiki as a universal force which we tap into when we are drawing abundance into our lives.

If you are looking for a book which gives you a step by step reiki treatment with symbols or hand positions, this isn't it. You'd probably do better to check out a book by Walter Lubeck, Frank Arjava Petter or the like. While I haven't seen them write a specific abundance technique, they have techniques for clearing negative thought patterns, for emotional healing, and for general manifesting which can easily be applied to the issue of Abundance and Prosperity. These books will give you thoroughly detailed (albeit sometimes very complicated) techniques to follow.
