William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 17 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 41 books on various aspects of these subjects. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions. He is a member of the editorial board of Cryptologia, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of cryptology. He is a frequent lecturer and author of numerous technical papers. His books include "Data and Computer Communications, Eighth Edition" (Prentice Hall, 2007), which has become the standard in the field. Dr. Stallings holds a PhD from M.I.T. in Computer Science and a B.S. from Notre Dame in electrical engineering.

The beginning part of this message was written on 9/10/2016. I'll keep updating this interview if necessary. This book has really pissed me off.

There is a giant mistake just in the beginning of the book:

On page 15, it says that "There is a direct relationship between the information-carrying capacity of a signal and its bandwidth: The greater the band width, the higher the information-carrying capacity." Then it gives three examples to show the relationship.

What is ridiculous is, in all the three cases (Cases I, II, and III, pages 15-17), the information-carrying capacity totally has nothing to do with the bandwidth, but only depends on the fundamental frequency (f) of the carrier wave.

How can an author make such a basic, serious mistake is beyond me.

Furthermore, it doesn't explain why the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f). -- I know why, but many other students don't, and the professor didn't explain it either even a student asked. She just said, "To make it a square wave, the frequencies of the harmonics have to be the odd multiples of the fundamental frequency (f)." And she didn't say "why." I wanted to explain, but I just didn't want to "show off."

Anyway, it's not a good book. I had to get it only because it was required for my class.

Today (9/15/2016) I found more mistakes in the book. On pages 95-97, about the ground wave, sky wave, and line-of-sight wave, the text says they are of "up to about 3 MHz," "3-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz" respectively, while the numbers on Figure 5.1 says "below 2 MHz," "2-30 MHz," and "above 30 MHz."

Also today (9/15/2016), Example 5.1 on page 101, in the text the satellite is 35,863 km from earth, but in calculation, the number becomes 35.853�1000,000 -- You see? The last three digits of the two are not the same: one is "863," and the other "853."

How can a person make so many mistakes in a textbook? And this is just the beginning.

The book is trash.

Great textbook

Content-wise, it is full of information and it provides helpful informative diagrams. The writing style is very technical and to the point. The end of chapter questions are split into two groups, review questions (to recall what was read) and problem questions (to use analytical thinking). Physically, the book cover and pages are very thin, making it a reasonably compact book to carry.

Good info, but not the current edition

This information changes extremely quickly and this is not the current edition of this book. If you buy this book, you will be getting information that is now at least three years old. There is a new edition that you can find on the author's website for significantly more money, in three volumes. I would rate the information and advice at 4 stars, I rate the attempt to sell the version that is 3 years old as unacceptable-- especially for $95. If you are interested in the topics here, the stale information in this version will most likely not help you without verification of whether the laws are still applicable. Again, the author is extremely thorough and I would recommend his CURRENT content, but not this book.

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Director of The Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and "think tank" focusing on issues of law, crime, and justice. The Justice Research Association, which is based in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, serves the needs of the nation's civil and criminal justice planners, administrators, and educators through workshops, conferences, and grant-writing and program evaluation support. Its most significant project to date is the Criminal Justice Distance Learning Consortium (CJDLC). CJDLC can be found on the Web at http://www.cjcentral.com/cjdlc.

Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master's (1970) and doctorate (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last sixteen of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. He was named Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2001. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university's graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. My purpose in writing this textbook has been to provide students with an appreciation for the fundamental nature of law, an overview of general legal principles, and a special understanding of the historical development of criminal law and its contemporary form and function in today's American society. Stories from real life, the critical placement of photographs illustrating cogent contemporary issues, and the use of end-of-chapter Capstone Cases are all meant to bring the law to life.

My approach has been strongly influenced by my belief that the law has always been, and remains, a vital policy-making tool. As a topic for study and discussion, the nature and life of the law is more important today than ever before. The challenges that face the law as it continues to adapt to the needs of a complex and rapidly changing society are highlighted in this text and serve to emphasize for readers the contemporary relevance of our ever-evolving American criminal law.

A central feature of this textbook can be found in its Capstone Cases, placed at the end of each chapter, which provide actual court opinions illustrating important themes in the law. Capstone Cases afford significant insights into the everyday workings of American jurisprudence, and they illustrate the logic by which appellate decisions are made. Law on the Books and Criminal Law in the News boxes, placed throughout the text, illustrate the multiplicity of legal perspectives found at federal, state, and local levels and make students aware of jurisdictional differences in the law. Marginal quotations, found alongside the text column throughout the book, serve to illustrate the inevitable link between matters of the criminal law and contemporary social issues.

Unlike most other criminal law textbooks, Criminal Law Today draws on the latest technology to facilitate learning. The guide also provides a useful self-paced review and allows self-testing for students wishing to delve more deeply into the subject matter of this text.

Like any author, lost in the proverbial forest of words, it is sometimes difficult for me to get a clear view of how my books will be received. As the first edition of this book neared completion, however, I felt satisfied that I had achieved what I set out to do. That feeling came as I glanced over the observations of one reviewer who had painstakingly read through this book as it was under development. It was in "acceptable" condition. I needed this book for school and it did the job. It was at a great price so very well worth it. All pages were there and had no tears. Overall very satisfied with my purchase.

Winston Graham (1908-2003) is the author of more than 40 novels, and is best known for the highly successful Poldark series. Stephen Thorne is a marvelous reader! The Poldark series has been filmed for PBS, so you may be familiar with the story. Don't let that keep you from listening to this audiobook. Late eighteenth-century Cornwall comes to life with Thorne's excellent narration, and he's a master of dialect. The everyday occurrences, as well as the conflicts and the war with France, provide an interesting background for the interaction between the Poldark and Warleggan families. The book itself is character driven; however, Thorne gives each one an individuality the listener can relate to. THE BLACK MOON: A GEM OF A NOVEL

The Poldark Series continues. The time is February 1794. In the opening pages, the author evokes an image of a sleepy Cornwall in the depths of a harsh and frigid winter. George Warleggan continues to expand his power and influence over the community. His wife Elizabeth (once Ross Poldark's great love) has given birth to a son, Valentine. Her son from her previous marriage to Ross' cousin Francis, Geoffrey Charles, has been given a governess, Morwenna Chynoweth (a cousin of Elizabeth's) to tutor him.

Two of Demelza's brothers, Sam and Drake Carne, both ardent Methodists, come to Ross and Demelza, seeking a new life for themselves in the community. Ross is not exactly thrilled to have them there. But he gives Sam a job working in one of his mines and Drake assumes a trademan's life. With the coming of the Carnes, Methodism in the community is given a considerable boost, which doesn't sit well with a number of the local notables.

The novel goes on to describe the ongoing relationship between Caroline and Dr. Dwight Enys, who had gone into the Navy when it seemed impossible that he and Caroline could marry over the objections of Caroline's uncle and guardian, who had deemed Dr. Enys as socially unsuitable for his niece, who soon stood to acquire an inheritance. The ship on which Dwight is serving as a surgeon is involved in a naval battle near the French coast, and most of the ship's survivors, including Dwight, are taken prisoner. When Caroline gets wind of this, she begins, with Ross, a campaign for Dwight's freedom.

There is also a developing relationship between Morwenna and Drake, which creates further conflict between the Poldarks and the Warleggans.

Again, as in the other novels of the Poldark Series, this is a novel that never falters. Besides the principal characters, there are also a number of minor characters who further enliven and enrich the drama. This is some of the best historical fiction you'll ever find.

So, take a seat by the window of your favorite room or stay in bed one holiday or weekend morning and enjoy what is a richly textured, well-told story. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I love to read

I started on these books after watching the newest TV version of Poldark. I love to read, and these books have become my all time favorites! The writing is outstanding. You fall in love with the characters. The story is fast moving, no dull and boring parts. I sit down to read for a bit and find myself unable to put it down. I an so very glad there are so many of them. I never want them to end!

Ross Poldarks story continues in the The Black Moon.

Thorughly enjoyed this book. It is the 5th in a series of 12 books. If you were lucky enough to catch the TV show when it aired last year, this book will help answer questions as to what happens to our hero Ross Poldark. I plan to finish the series and am already sad to think I will be coming to the end. Series 2 of the show is being released in Britain in Sep 16. Expect the books to gain lots of new fans. Winston Graham is a masterful story teller.
