Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe is arguably one of the two or three most beloved detectives in fiction, and this fifth volume of Goldsborough's authorized re-creations of the series hero provides yet another opportunity for purists to argue whether he has captured the spirit or merely the form of the originals. This flat and not very mysterious tale will probably support the latter argument. Wolfe and wisecracking Archie Goodwin are hired to find out who is leaking a small advertising agency's secrets to a large and powerful competitor. As is often the case, Wolfe is not terribly interested in the proceedings, not even when the investigation widens to include the murder of a young executive who apparently knew the truth--and he must be constantly cajoled by Archie to keep things moving. All the set pieces involving Wolfe's many idiosyncrasies, the various meals served at his West 35th Street brownstone and irate visits by the irascible Inspector Cramer seem forced, rather than familiar and comfortable, and the classic final gathering of all involved lacks drama and suspense. This one is strictly for fans who can't get enough of the fat man.

About the Author
Robert Goldsborough (b. 1937) is an American author best known for continuing Rex Stout’s famous Nero Wolfe series. Born in Chicago, he attended Northwestern University and upon graduation went to work for the Associated Press, beginning a lifelong career in journalism that would include long periods at the�Chicago Tribune�and�Advertising Age.
While at the�Tribune, Goldsborough began writing mysteries in the voice of Rex Stout, the creator of iconic sleuths Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Goldsborough’s first novel starring Wolfe,�Murder in E Minor�(1986), was met with acclaim from both critics and devoted fans, winning a Nero Award from the Wolfe Pack. Nine more Wolfe mysteries followed, including�Death on Deadline�(1987) and�Fade to Black�(1990). Stop the Presses!�(2016) is his most recent novel. �

The book was is great condition, and was received on time. The only complaint I have has to do with the author, who really tried MUCH too hard to seem like Nero Wolfe. There was only one Nero Wolfe -- and this man didn't even come close.

Another delightful surprise!

Another delightful surprise to hardcore Wolfe fans! Fade To Black is very good. This is the second Goldsborough Nero Wolfe book I read; the first The Last Coincidence. The plot surrounds two rival advertising agencies and two soft-drink companies. I became enmeshed in the story and forgot it wasn't a Stout. An interesting and creative plot with very real-to-life characters, very believable. Goldsborough does a great job of writing in the same style, vein, and language as Rex Stout, and the main characters have continued to develop and evolve throughout the years and adapt to modern times and technologies - just as Stout did when writing his Wolfe mysteries. If you have read the original Rex Stout Nero Wolfe mysteries, you will have a treat in Goldsborough's new ones! And, having read all of Stout's Wolfe mysteries many times over, I have fresh reads to look forward to and enjoy!

Well, well, well ... It pays to hang in. Miracles can happen, and how sweet it is. The real Archie is actually resurrected in this edition from Stout's version, and all new to Goldsborough's (definitely from the excruciatingly wretched portrayal in "The Last Coincidence). Very fine. The full Monty, no less. His dimensions are back. Truth to tell, there is actual sparkle in the writing on this one. Die hard Stout fans may not allow for such strong praise, but amazingly, this one actually deserves it. Not only has the writing quality and - oh so critically - the handling of Archie - turned around, it excels. It is night to day from the last volume.
As soon as I began the first paragraph of this book, I picked up a strong and fresh vitality. As it continued for several chapters, I began hoping against a let down, but needn't have. It is full of zest from start to finish. For the first time with this continuance, I find myself laughing out loud at Archie and saying Yes! to Wolfe's interview comebacks. Like old Stout times. A balanced and effective repertoire. The front hall scene with Archie, Foreman and the "clown princes" is a major treat, including the interview that followed. Wolfe is in his finest form herein, up to Stout standards. The timing and tempo are spot-on. Bravo.
Apparently Goldsborough exercised revision guided by reviews and did it up roundly. My hat's off to him for a thoroughgoing job of it. Get this: Chapter 16, a round with Goodwin vs. Wolfe: "The conversation continued in that vein for several more minutes, but there's no reason you should have to endure any more of it." Thank you, Mr. G. This handling is a sublime relief and marked improvement over previous volumes, which did not spare unendurable dialog between the two. So far for me, this is the only RG volume eligible as a candidate for being mistaken as a Stout entry. Again - BRAVO, Mr. Goldsborough.
There's a refreshing period of truce and spate of civil conversation with Cramer. The myriad of client characters ring true to the varied types. Yes, there is only one Wolfe, but along with being a genius, he is also a stinker and this blend is well represented here. Fantabulous - a word which would cause him to grimace. I wish he could hear me say it. (Shades of Archie.) There's a good phrase newbie in this one, mentioning Wolfe staging one of his "bravura performances," or at least I've not noticed it before. Quite good. In any event, this book definitely represents a bravura breakthrough performance for Goldsborough.
All right already! and at last. Glad I didn't quit on it. This volume is a keeper, very enjoyably written.
