About the Author
Pierre Jules Th�ophile Gautier was a French poet, dramatist, novelist, journalist, and literary critic. He was a contributor to various journals, most notably to La Presse. He was director of Revue de Paris from 1851-1856. During this time, Gautier left La Presse and became a journalist for Le Moniteur Universel. Gautier acquired the editorship of influential review L'Artiste in 1856. In 1862 he was elected chairman of the Soci�t� Nationale des Beaux-Arts. During the Franco-Prussian war, Gautier made his way back to Paris. He remained with his family throughout the invasion and the aftermath of the Commune, eventually dying in 1872 of a cardiac disease.

A Great Gothic Tale

The Mummy's Foot by Th�ophile Gautier is a traditional and charming Gothic tale. Gautier tells the tale of an aristocratic Frenchman who purchases a mummified foot to be used as a paperweight in a curiosity shop. The foot, which is taken from Princess Hermonthis, is more than what it seems, and inspires a fantastic nocturnal journey for its new owner.

Short Gothic Tale

The Mummy's Foot is mediocre, because the plot line is so predictable. I enjoyed reading the description of the antique shop where Gautier describes it as having only two authentic items: dust and cobwebs. It is well written; his prose is very powerful and very visual. You can really see the shop, its owner, and the protagonist's flat. Otherwise, the plot follows the traditional trajectory of someone who purchases and item from a dubious shop with an equally dubious shopkeeper. There is magic, of course, but nothing spectacular about the tale.

It works! And, it's not as scary as it seems!

This book has made a HUGE difference in my family! My husband and I were very anti-sleep training, but our 5 month old was becoming a worse and worse sleeper and we were all suffering. After trying a variety of co-sleeping and no-cry methods, I finally decided to read Ferber's book. The science and research in this book convinced me to try it. I learned all about sleep associations and how my son had some that were really making it impossible for him to sleep independently. Ferber gives an analogy that led to my aha moment: Imagine you went to sleep in your bed with the conditions you're used to: same bed, pillow, blanket, lighting, etc, but then woke up on your living room floor. You would be completely confused and would probably find it very difficult to go back to sleep. This is what happens to babies when they are nursed/rocked to sleep and then placed in another environment already asleep--they wake up confused and unable to go back to sleep. Therefore, babies need to learn how to fall asleep on their own in order to get good quality sleep so that when they wake up they aren't confused and having to adjust to new conditions. This principle makes so much sense that I became willing to try letting my son cry for a bit in order to learn how to fall asleep independently.

The first night was pretty hard. My son whimpered for a bit, then cried as if he was going to die for about 15 minutes. We followed Ferber's recommendations of going in to reassure the baby you're still there for him (without picking him up). He stopped crying and had fallen asleep within 20 minutes. He woke up 2 hours later and cried for about 10 minutes, so my husband went in and patted/talked to him. He then slept for about six hours, woke to nurse and went right back to sleep (no tears) for about three more hours. Previously he had been waking constantly throughout the night, sometimes every 30 minutes.

The second night, he cried for ZERO minutes and was asleep within five minutes. He woke up once to nurse, and then slept until seven AM.

The third night, he cried for ZERO minutes, so now I am writing this review to let parents know that this method worked for my family. My husband and I, who previously believed this method was cruel and not something we'd ever try, have come to the realization that those 15 minutes of crying have led to a child (and a mom and dad) who are MUCH more likely to get some decent sleep and be able to function in the daytime. I think we actually did a very good thing for our child!

A few caveats from our experience: we had a solid bedtime routine for at least a month leading up to this (bath, book, songs, nurse to sleep). We moved the nursing session to right before bath, and kept everything else the same except putting him down awake in his crib. I think having this routine established before trying the Ferber techniques led to us only having one evening of crying and such an easy time with the process. Additionally, the second night I put my son in his pajamas and in a Halo swaddle sack (arms out), and it's possible that snug feeling of the swaddle helped him go right to sleep as well.

No more sleepless nights!!

Our second child was 9-months old and still would not sleep through the night. What made this worse is she would only go to sleep (or back to sleep) if she was given a bottle and rocked. Both my husband and I work full-time so we were exhausted. We could not keep waking up with her 3-5 times a night and still function the next day. We were frustrated and had to teach her to sleep, which this book helped us do...in five nights!

- By 7 nights she was not eating 2-3 bottles a night

- Easy read and thorough. The examples make complete sense and I love that it gives exact steps to follow.

Cons:
- Hard to listen to the baby cry with consoling her. We put our video monitor in there so I could watch her and make sure she was okay.
- Our child was stubborn so the first night it took 2.5 hours of crying before she fell asleep. The next night took 1.5 hours. It lessened each night, but prepare for a long night and do it when you don't have anywhere to be the next day because they also have to put themselves back to sleep when they wake up at night...which takes forever!

Overall, it was a tough week, but completely worth it! I would recommend this to anyone. Never once did I feel like I was neglecting my child and we are both so much happier now that we're getting adequate sleep.

Like most parents, the sound of my baby crying is the worst sound in the world. For this reason, I delayed trying the Ferber method even though I knew rocking my 9 month old daughter to sleep every night was probably unwise, especially because she woke up crying multiple times every night. Out of desperation, I tried the Ferber method, exactly as described in this book. It took only three nights before my daughter stopped crying at bedtime. Now, I don't have to spend 30 minutes to an hour rocking her to sleep. She now reliably goes to sleep every night, with no tears, and with a minimum of fuss. She sleeps pretty much through the night every night.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Really good intro to signal transduction. Unfortunately it does not go into depth about any complex interactions, or offer info that isn't available in an up to date biochemistry book, but if you want to learn the basics of signal transduction without getting lost in basic biochem this may be good for you.

If you thought signal transduction was hard...

One gets the sense upon reading this book that it was translated into English from some esoteric dead language and not from that close cousin of English, contemporary German. One would think that a book this expensive and a publisher this well-known would be able to fork out enough cash to hire a competent translator. If you thought signal transduction was Talmudic in its complexity, you will not be disappointed as you try to unravel the meaning of sentences in this truly awful and labored translation.

Meanwhile, the militarization of the U.S.-Mexican border has discouraged Mexican migrants from leaving the United States, creating a pool of exploitable workers who lack the legal rights of citizens. Massey also shows that women’s advances in the labor market have been concentrated among the affluent and well-educated, while low-skilled female workers have been relegated to occupations that offer few chances for earnings mobility. At the same time, as the wages of low-income men have fallen, more working-class women are remaining unmarried and raising children on their own. Even as minorities and women continue to face these obstacles, the progressive legacy of the New Deal has come under frontal assault. The government has passed anti-union legislation, made taxes more regressive, allowed the real value of the federal minimum wage to decline, and drastically cut social welfare spending. As a result, the income gap between the richest and poorest has dramatically widened since 1980. Massey attributes these anti-poor policies in part to the increasing segregation of neighborhoods by income, which has insulated the affluent from the social consequences of poverty, and to the disenfranchisement of the poor, as the population of immigrants, prisoners, and ex-felons swells.

America’s unrivaled disparities are not simply the inevitable result of globalization and technological change. As Massey shows, privileged groups have systematically exploited and excluded many of their fellow Americans. Categorically Unequal reads more like...

Categorically Unequal reads more like an academic paper than a popular nonfiction book. It has a good overview of stratification and references a lot of research about stratification in the US. It was certainly eye opening.

I would have given Categorically Unequal 5 stars as an informative book. I gave it 3 stars because the way it pushes the liberal agenda is too neat and one-sided.

Although this is not a textbook (strictly speaking), it reads like one, which is what I think the author intended. It is a concise and inexpensive introduction to the history of social inequality in the United States. Massey is one of the premier sociologists of stratification, so much of the literature he reviews, summarizes, and describes here is his own, or that of the many people he has trained and/or collaborated with over the years. No one knows the research better than he does, and it shows. Not only that, but he writes in a style that is accessible to the uninitiated reader.

Massey is a sociologist, but he approaches the topic of stratification from the perspective of cognitive psychology. He discusses how humans tend to lump people into categorical groups based on social characteristics. In the U.S. the most salient characteristics have been race, gender, and social class. He describes how our response to people in the preferred categories ('in-group'), as well as those in other categories ('out-groups') is to some extent 'hard-wired' in our brains and thus operates at a subconscious level. These primal prejudices have resulted in institutional practices and individual behaviors that have disadvantaged the poor, women, and people of color. Even some of the more progressive social welfare policies of the 20th century were intentionally crafted to exclude these 'undesirable' groups.

This book is a real eye-opener, but it is bound to frustrate some readers because Massey debunks the popular myth that America is a land of equal opportunity, in which any individual can succeed by dint of hard work and talent, irrespective of social characteristics. He does concede that there has been some recent improvement for certain disadvantaged groups, but he also demonstrates how past inequality persists - and can even compound its effect - into the present. Although I found his lapses into conventional liberal rhetoric annoying, his arguments were persuasive because of the overwhelming evidence he presents. If you're looking for an entry point into the sociological research on stratification, you can't do any better than this.

Excellent book, great scholar

I cannot improve on the brilliant 5 star review by Martin Hughes. I take off one point because the book is not going to win any prizes for being interesting reading. It is too academic for most people. But it is an excellent book by a scholar with a well deserved reputation. Lots of information, good statistics, good references (40 pages), good index. Airplanes can be divided into two main classes: war airplanes
and mercantile airplanes.
In the former, those qualities are essentially desired which
increase their war efficiency, as for instance: high speed,
great climbing power, more or less great cruising radius,
possibility of carrying given military loads (arms, munitions,
bombs, etc.), good visibility, facility in installing
armament, etc.
For mercantile airplanes, on the contrary, while the speed
has the same great importance a high climbing power is
not an essential condition; but the possibility of transporting
heavy useful loads and great quantities of gasoline and
oil, in order to effectuate long journeys without stops,
assumes a capital importance.
Whatever type is to be designed, the general criterions
do not vary. Usually the designer can select the type of
engine from a more or less vast series; often though, the
type of motor is imposed and that naturally limits the
fields of possibility.
Rather than exposing the abstract criterion, it is more
interesting to develop summarily in this and the following
chapters, the general outline of a project of a given type
of airplane, making general remarks which are applicable
to each design as it appears. In order to fix this idea,
let us suppose that we wish to study a fast airplane to be
used for sport races.

Good instructions... a bit dated.

The designs and instructions were well detailed. It's obviously a bit dated, but the aeronautical engineering is sound and the explanations cogent. Enjoyed it a lot. Now, if my garage was big enough, I'd go build myself a nice little biplane.

Old Book With Lots of Good Information and Awful Formatting

This book is actually "Airplane Design and Construction" by Erich Hartfield. It is a very old book, but it has a ton of great information and diagrams.

The book is divided into four parts. The first three sections are about the structure of the airplane and how different design considerations for the various structural elements will affect the flight characteristics of the airplane. There are lots of illustrations, diagrams, charts, and formulas.

The final section is about the "Design of the Aircraft". This section contains a mix of outdated information in the section about materials with other good information about determining flight characteristics, static analysis, etc.

This book is not in text. It is a compilation of scanned images of the pages. Each page displays with a large margin and big empty column on the right side. You can click and zoom to make it larger, but it has to be done on each page. With better formatting this book would get 5-stars.
